The tourbillon was developed sometime in 1975 and patented by founder Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801. It is by far the most complex mechanical complication to date, found in the movements of some high-end mechanical watches.
It’s no wonder that Breguet watches have become some of the most coveted accessories among the diplomatic, military, and elites from the 19th century and well into modern times. Fast forward to the present and the brand has released several watch lines under its belt, including today’s focus, the Marine collection.
Introducing the 2021 Versions of the Breguet Marine
Breguet was the official watchmaker to the French Royal Navy during the founder’s lifetime and what might have been the brand’s other crowning achievement was being a supplier of marine chronometers to the French Royal Navy. These were the Breguet Marine watches—the sporty watches based on the traditional Breguet values and interpreted in contemporary designs.
Three updated designs for the brand’s flagship sports watch were recently released and they are nothing short of the features that make them a Breguet. Like all the Marine watches launched since 2017, these models maintain a classic, naval chronometer-inspired design with luxurious and sporty elements. They carry the hallmarks of the Marine such as the roman numerals, impressive water resistance ratings, and signature Breguet-style hands, to name a few.
- Breguet Marine 5517
The Marine 5517 in 18K rose gold case and bracelet is a three-hand, time-and-date model that sports a distinctive dial with contrasting colors and textures—features that have come to define the Breguet line. It looks proportioned on the wrist with its 40mm diameter and 11.5mm thickness. However, what gives it its unique silhouette is the geometric crown guards and integrated lugs. Meanwhile, the case has a brushed finish with accents of polished and fluted sides.
The 100-meter water-resistant model is presented on a textured rubber strap. However, it’s also offered on a matching rose-gold bracelet or a leather strap as alternatives. It’s also available in titanium with a blue dial, and both versions are powered by the Breguet Caliber 777A, which boasts an inverted in-line lever escapement and an impressive 55-hour power reserve.
- Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527
This chronograph version of the Marine is similar to the time-and-date model in terms of configuration: luminous outer minute ring, outer curved edge, and applied Roman numeral hour markers. But, where it sets itself apart is its 42.3mm by 13.85 titanium case, which makes it lighter and sportier in style versus the rose gold Marine version. It is also presented on a standard H-link titanium bracelet with two ovular chronograph pushers.
With this reference, we also see differently sized chronograph sub-dial displays for the hour, minute, and second counters. Overall, the model guarantees ease of use of the chronograph functionality. The watch is powered by the Breguet Caliber 582QA with 48 hours of power reserve. Besides titanium, it’s also available in a rose gold version.
- Breguet Marine Alarme Musicale 5547
Concluding the trio of new releases is the Marine Alarme Musicale 5547 that features a mechanical alarm functionality. It is housed in the signature geometrical case that measures 40mm in diameter and 13.05mm in thickness.
The showcased version is the blue-dialed edition in a titanium case and features subdials for the alarm function and a second time zone display. There’s also a power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock and an oblong date window at 6 o’clock. The Breguet Caliber 519F/1 beats inside the model and is visible underneath the sapphire display caseback.

These new Marine watches are already available in authorized Breguet retailers with prices starting at $28,600 for the rose gold Marine 5517 version. The most expensive on the list is the Marine Alarme Musical 5547 in rose gold which retails for $39,900.
