The threat of climate change is something that we have all become accustomed to over the years and many people have begun to do their bit to reduce their carbon footprint.
However, countless children around the world may not know anything about our environment which could be problematic as they grow up. This is because they may not know how they can help to save the world from climate change.
With that, there may be a place in schools for environmental education to inform children on why we need to protect the earth and how we can do just that. Learning about the environment is fun and here are some of the best ways to do it.
- Start a vegetable garden
Inform the children on how growing our own crops helps to reduce our carbon footprint as well as decreases plastic usage then invite them to plant some of their favorite vegetables.
Once they see their vegetables grow, they will also understand the reward involved in growing food and appreciate the hard work that goes into it.
- Plant trees at your school
Begin by explaining how trees absorb the earth’s CO2 and produce oxygen which allows life on earth to breathe and without them the earth would struggle to function. Inform them on the harmful effects of deforestation and how it can be prevented.
Once they understand the necessity of trees, teach them how to plant one to add an element of practical learning to your lesson. This will make them feel more connected to the trees so the information is more likely to stick in their minds.
- Create bird boxes/ bird feeders from recycled plastic.
A combination of two vital areas of the environment: recycling and wildlife. This lesson is a great opportunity to teach the children why we must recycle to help the environment but that doesn’t always mean throwing away our recycled materials.
Instead, ask the children to make bird feeders from recycled materials as a method of supporting local wildlife. Our environment thrives off having diverse wildlife within it so we must ensure we help animals such as birds survive by feeding them.
- Light up the fishing net with Microbit
These lessons don’t all have to take place outside however, in fact, one project that is extremely fun for children yet great for helping wildlife is creating a light up fishing net using a Microbit device.
When a fisherman uses this device, they can see what they are fishing much better which means they’ll be able to see the animals they would like to fish whilst avoiding animals that may potentially be endangered.
