When looking at education in a Montessori school, you should look at the vision of the school. Do they have a traditional curriculum or have they modified it?
There’s nothing wrong with either option, but you have to decide what you’re looking for.
At some schools, they offer education for toddlers when they’re two years old. This will get them ready for when they start K through 8. Some schools only offer a K through 8 program.
- Accredited Program
You should also check to make sure the Montessori classes are accredited. In order for a teacher to be a Montessori teacher, they’ll have to go through a program that’s run by the American Montessori Society.
You can contact the institution and ask for proof of their accreditation, but they may have it listed on their website as well. If you don’t see one, make sure you ask. If they can’t provide it, their program is not accredited, and you should look elsewhere.
- Environment
They should incorporate bold and bright colors to make it inviting. There should also be toys that the children can play with and interact with.
Are their photos everywhere? Do you think it’s an environment that could help stimulate learning and curiosity?
- Program Size
Montessori programs put a large focus on having a good community, which might mean that the classes are larger.
If you’re worried about whether or not your child will get one-on-one time, make sure you ask a teacher or director about it.
- Teachers
The teachers will either make or break the program for you, so make sure you set up interviews with any teacher your student might have.
A Montessori teacher will be engaging with groups of students and working with them hands-on, rather than standing at the front of the classroom and lecturing. They’ll also spend a lot of time observing their class to see which students might need more help.
They’ll act more as a mentor rather than a director. They’ll promote open and honest communication with everyone so that students can have the best environment to learn in.
