5 Tips When Preparing for Colleges in Sydney, Australia

Sydney colleges attract students from all over the world. If you are one of them, there are a few important things you can do to be prepared for your education.

  1. Get a Visa

There are several colleges in Sydney, Australia for international students, but you must have a visa if you plan to remain in the city for more than three months.

Fortunately, you can likely do this online, linking your application with your passport. Make sure you do this well ahead of time as it can take several weeks to get your visa in the mail.

  1. Get Health Coverage

If you are attending a study abroad program, chances are that your health insurance is included. If that’s not the case, you will need to obtain Overseas Student Health Cover.

This coverage pays for your medical care and any required hospital stays as long as you are a student in Australia. It also helps pay for prescription medications.

You will need to buy your coverage before you arrive in Australia. It must be purchased for anyone traveling with you as well. Your coverage will need to remain in place as long as you are using a student visa.

  1. Open a Bank Account

If you plan to remain in Australia for an extended amount of time to study, you will want to have a bank account. The fees for withdrawing money from your account back home can get quite expensive.

If you decide to work while you’re in Australia, a bank account here makes it easier to access your money. Some also offer interest rates that can benefit your finances.

  1. Find a Place to Live

With so many colleges in Sydney for international students, there are plenty of options for cheap student accommodation.

Some colleges offer residential housing options for students. This is a great idea if you don’t have a vehicle and need to be close to your classes.

Other options include a homestay, hostels, guesthouses, or renting your own private home or apartment.

  1. Learn About Australia

Before you land in Sydney, Australia, it’s a good idea to know a little bit more about it. For example, if you’re coming from the United States or the UK, the seasons are opposite.
