3 Solid Steps to Becoming a Mechanic

Have you ever been to an auto shop and found yourself fascinated by their work? Do you like to watch shows about automobiles and how they function? Chances are good that you’d find enjoyment and satisfaction working as a mechanic.

Becoming a mechanic isn’t as simple as reading a manual and applying for a job, though. Despite what some people think, you still need to pursue an education and get the right training.

Here are the three major steps on how to become a mechanic.

  1. Complete Your Education

Contrary to popular belief, many mechanics out there began their careers by pursuing a traditional education. The three different types of degrees out there include a mechanic certificate, a mechanic associate’s degree, and a mechanic bachelor’s degree.

The certificate is the most basic education you can get in this field. It involves classroom instruction and hands-on training.

An associate’s degree is more comprehensive and may focus on specialized education. A bachelor’s degree puts more weight on engineering principles and mathematics.

You can find auto mechanic courses taught online and at in-person colleges. Applicants will require their high school transcripts as well as any previous college coursework.

  1. Find an Apprenticeship

One of the most important steps to becoming a mechanic is getting hands-on training. To do so, you’ll need to find an apprenticeship that will show you the ropes. The quality of that training and who you worked under will determine the kind of mechanic work you have access to in the future.

Your mentor should teach you what to expect in a mechanic career. This includes how to interact with customers, the repair process, and how to use a mechanics lien to protect yourself.

The school you attend should be able to help set up an apprenticeship. If you haven’t received higher education, you can still apply for apprenticeships at certain shops if you have proven experience and knowledge.

  1. Obtain Your License

The final step is to obtain your official mechanic’s license. Legally speaking, individual auto mechanics don’t need a license to repair vehicles in most states. However, having a license greatly expands your job opportunities as well as reassures customers that you are qualified.

There are multiple different types of certification you can acquire, including engine repair, brakes, and air conditioning. One of the most important ones you can get is the ASE certification.

Holding this certificate shows everyone that you pay attention to detail, have good customer service skills and can diagnose problems. You can acquire one after passing the NATEF test, which covers the seven basic components of car repair and maintenance.

Becoming a Mechanic
